Insulating glass units

There is always a heat loss from the heated space through an exterior wall of the building, measured by the so called “U value”. At the moment, the functions of the insulating glass can be obtained using various combinations of two or more glass panes, covering them with special layers, applying so called “warm edges” and filling the space between the panes with argon or other noble gases.

 

When possibly low „U values” are ensured, a better thermal insulation of the building is obtained, what directly reflects on the reduction of heating costs, environmental protection and ensures an adequate microclimate in the room. In the past, windows and panes were the weakest points of this insulation. The insulating glass applied until now in the best case guaranteed the U values of about 3,0 W/m*2K and the single glass only  5,8 W/m*2K

Double pane glass units

Double pane glass units

Double pane glass units is a combination of 4-16-4 LE+ and 4-16Ar-4 LE+. 
The U values are from 1,3 to 1,0 W/m2*K, so that they are twice lower than in case of the insulation glass units used until now. The glass doesn’t cause heat loss – on the contrary – it permits to clearly reduce the amount of energy used for heating
a building.

Triple pane glass units is a combination of 4-12-4-12-4 Ar LE+ and 4-12CR-4-12CR-4 Ar LE+. The U values are of about 0,6W/m2*K. This result is 40% better than in one-chamber packages used until now. The newest generation of insulation panes is an important element of modern construction and it can be applied in energy saving buildings and passive houses.

 

The use of triple pane glass units directly reflects on the reduction of heating costs and protection of the environment.

Sound-absorbing glass units

Nowadays, the people are exposed to high noise levels, what in extreme cases can even lead to health problems. 


A better protection against noise and at the same time high thermal insulation can be obtained using glass units of a varied thickness of glass sheets of which the glass units are composed or panes laminated with special sound-absorbing VSG foils.  The replacement of traditional glass units by the combination 6-16-4 LE + or
 6-16-4 LE + Ar provides much better protection against noise. 

 

In order to obtain even better acoustic parameters, glass units of more complex combination should be used, with panes laminated by special sound-absorbing foils. 

Safety glass

The glass units 3.3.1-14-4 and 3.3.1-12-3.3.1 ensure safety and thermal insulation. The system 3.3.1-14-4 combines thermal insulation with protection against hurting in case of breaking the glass, It’s based on the technology of glass units
4-16-4 in which single glass was replaced by safety glass. Safety glass 3.3.1 are two glass sheets 3 mm thick joined by a PVB foil resistant to tearing, which in case of breaking the glass ties the pieces of glass together. It’s ideal for large format glazing surfaces of windows and doors, particularly in places where there are children.

 

In order to increase safety, instead of the panes with PVB foil, tempered glass can be used, which has eight times bigger resistance to breaking than the standard glass. In case of breaking, small pieces of blunt edges appear, what greatly reduces the danger of hurting people.

The glass units of a combination 4.4.2-14-4, 4.4.4-14-4 and 4.4.4-12-3.3.1 – increase the protection against breaking, vandalism or attack from the outside.

 

4.4.2 and 4.4.4 is a transparent, safety glued glass, formed by two panes, joined firmly by a transparent foil of an extremely high resistance to tearing. Such glass provides an optimal protection of people and their property, greatly difficulties breaking of third parties through the window, door or balcony. In private houses, it’s practically sufficient to use panes of the protection class 02 or P2, P4. It’s important to use - besides reinforced glass panes - also increased number of reinforcing fastenings and special handles. Safety glass meets all the requirements in the field of thermal insulation, in accordance with the newest regulations.

Ornamental and frosted glass

Ornamental and frosted glass

Glass units can be made in a version in which one of the panes is made from ornamental or frosted glass. This solution is a very efficient and simple method of protection of privacy and at the same time lets the light pass through and lightens the room. An additional advantage of ornamental glass are its decorative characteristics that give us the possibility of choosing and varying the style.  

The application of ornamental or frosted panes does not worsen the thermal insulation of the glass units and the colorless light permeability can be from 80% to 90%, depending on the pattern and thickness.

Anti-solar glass

The glass units in which one of the panes is made of anti-solar glass can be used in order to reduce the excessive insolation of the rooms and cut down the amount of solar energy transmitted inside the building. The anti-solar glass characteristic is
a low grade of solar energy transmittance.

Besides its basic function - anti-solar protection - the glass is appreciated for its great aesthetic values due to the broad range of colors and discrete reflecting of the images of the surroundings.  

 Colorful, reflective glass offers many possibilities of solutions while designing glazed parts of the buildings. Anti-solar glass units can be made using colored glass or covered by reflective layers. Colored glass may be made of glass available in blue, brown, graphite or green.

Stopsol – reflective glass with an overlay of metallic oxide in order to obtain the proper effect of reflection, clear glass available in blue, brown, graphite or green color or only with a colorless coating.  

The application of anti-solar glass doesn’t worsen the thermal insulation of glass units.    

Warm edges

Warm edges

A very important element of insulating glass are so called warm edges that connect the exterior and interior panes. Warm edges not only are an aesthetic, colorful element between two sheets of glass but, above all, they account for functional advantages and increased thermal insulation. 


An element which separates panes in a glass unit can be considered warm when the thermal transmittance coefficient is lower than 0.007 W/K. The growing application of warm edges which replace simple aluminum glass spacers results from the confirmed information that thermal parameters of the window are influenced not only by the heat loss through the glass, but also through the edges of the insulating glass unit – the spacer which separates the sheets of a glass unit. 


The results of measurement using thermovision cameras in 100% confirm that the replacement of metal material by a modern „warm” one is fully justified. On the left there is a window equipped in “warm edges”, on the right in a classical aluminum glass spacer.

 

The application of warm edges greatly reduces the humid releasing phenomenon which during severe frosts appears along the connection line between the glass pane and the window frame. This benefit of the warm edges is the easiest to be observed.

Muntin bars

Muntin bars

The muntin bars (also called astragals) are decorative elements firmly assembled inside the glass unit. The muntin bars, depending on the width, color and shape, may be an additional decoration of the window or allude to the style of an old architecture. The execution and placing of the muntin bars requires precise planning. The dimensions of the muntin bars may be in a good proportion to the window and its shape and type should harmonize with the style of the building.

 

The muntin bars can be varnished in any color of the RAL palette or coated with the renolit foils, due to what they will have the same color and structure as the window frames. The varnished muntin bars may have the width of 8,18,26,45 mm while the muntin bars coated with renolit foil can have the width of 18, 26, 45 mm.
